Memorial Resolution: Terry K. Glenn(The following resolution was read at the Academy Corporation meeting, May 5, and the General Church Board of Directors meeting, May 19 – in each case followed by a moment of silence.) Terry K. Glenn’s unwavering commitment to his faith embodied the New Church Doctrine of Use – that we should make constant effort to apply the gifts and skills the Lord has given us to serving Him and His Church. Mr. Glenn pursued a life of use with unfaltering vigor and indefatigable humor. He attained great success in his career and volunteer endeavors. Even so, he never let status, recognition or accolades distract him from serving the Lord and His Church to the best of his ability. Terry and Eileen Reider Glenn enjoyed a marriage of 39 years. Their daughters, Erin Busby and Brooke Mullin, were the joy of Terry’s life, and anyone who spent time with Terry will recall how he beamed when he talked about them. He adored his granddaughter, Katie. Throughout his life, he maintained strong relationships with his immediate family. For more than three decades, Terry unselfishly volunteered his time and expertise to the Church, helping to chart the financial future of the General Church and the Academy. He was elected to the Corporation of the Academy of the New Church in 1988, and in the following year he was elected to the Board of the Academy of the New Church. Terry served on the Board for more than a decade, including assignments on its Investment, Budget and Audit, and Finance Committees. He was an instrumental member of the Joint Investment Committee, the oversight body of the New Church Investment Fund. He served at least one term as chair of the Investment Committees. Mr. Glenn was a strong advocate for protecting the Academy’s endowment. He often warned of the dangers of eating the institution’s “seed corn” and prematurely expending a resource for future expansion. After retiring from the Academy Board in 2002, Terry was immediately elected to the General Church Board of Directors and served in a very active role right up to his passing into the spiritual world. In Terry’s opinion, long-range financial planning was an absolute necessity, and he was always prepared to defend this view. Through insightful questioning, he demanded the same rigorous groundwork from committee members as well as the administration of the Academy and the General Church. Additionally, Terry worked tirelessly to support other educational organizations. He served on the endowment investment committee at Swarthmore College and was a trustee of the College of William and Mary, his undergraduate alma mater. After graduating from the Academy of the New Church Boys School, Terry earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. An Army Reserve veteran, he practiced law in New York and Boston, and then worked as a securities executive in Cleveland. In 1983 he joined Merrill Lynch and worked for the firm until retiring as Vice President of Investment Managers in 2004. Terry served as Chairman of the Board of the Investment Company Institute from 2000 to 2002. The General Church and the Academy will benefit for generations from
Terry’s extraordinary leadership and professional ability. Any future
expansion of the New Church nationally and internationally will result
in large part from the mission-oriented financial planning that was Terry
Glenn’s hallmark. |
